Yannis Behrakis was born in 1960 in Athens, Greece, where he studied photography at the Athens School of Arts and Technology and received his BA in arts by the Middlesex university. He began a working relationship with Reuters in 1987 and as of 1989 is a permanent staff member. Today, he heads the agency's photo department in Greece and Cyprus under the title of Chief Photographer.
Over the past 15 years, he has covered a variety of events including the funeral of Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran, the changes in Eastern Europe and the Balkans, the civil conflict in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo, the wars in Chechnya, Sierra Leone, Somalia and most recently, Afghanistan. During the Gulf war he covered the Kurdish crisis at the northern Iraqi border with Turkey. He has also covered the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for many years.
Yannis has also covered three Summer Olympics, the World Cup in the US and many other international sports events.
His photojournalistic work has been published in newspapers, magazines, and books around the world.
Among several prestigious awards he has received Yannis, has been named seven times News Photographer of the Year by the Greek National Fuji Awards, winning the European top honor 3 times in London, Barcelona and Rome. He is the only photographer to have won the highest prize twice (in 1998, 2002 and 2003). In 1999 he received the Overseas Press Club of America photography award, which is the most prestigious award for a foreign correspondent in the US. In 2000 he received the most prestigious Greek photojournalistic prize, the Botsis Foundation Award, from the President of the Greek Republic, Mr. Costis Stephanopoulos.
In 2000, his work on Kosovo was chosen as best in the General News Stories category, by the World Press Photo Foundation, among the 40,000 photos submitted by 4000 international photographers from 122 countries. In the 2002 Bayeux Awards for war correspondents, he won the second prize in the photography category for his pictures of the liberation of Kabul, as well the Prix de Public (the public's choice), among all the submissions in all four categories of the contest (TV, radio, text and photos).
Yannis has participated in many group photo exhibitions in Greece and abroad. In 2001, his first solo exhibition at the Zappeio Congress Hall in Athens, featuring photos from Afghanistan, was inaugurated by President of the Republic Mr. Constantine Stephanopoulos, and the proceeds were donated to the UNICEF children's fund. In 2002, Yannis' retrospective exhibition titled Eyewitness, was shown in Athens, where the proceeds were donated to the Medicins du Monde foundation. He took part in exhibitions in London, Dublin, Rome, Madrid, Thessaloniki and Dubai

Tra diversi prestigiosi riconoscimenti che ha ricevuto Yannis, è stato nominato sette volte Fotografo News of the Year da parte della nazionale greca Fuji Awards, vincendo il top europeo onore 3 volte a Londra, Barcellona e Roma. Egli è l'unico fotografo ad avere vinto il premio più alto due volte (nel 1998, 2002 e 2003). Nel 1999 ha ricevuto il Overseas Press Club of America fotografia premio, che è il più prestigioso premio per un corrispondente straniero negli Stati Uniti. Nel 2000 ha ricevuto il più prestigioso premio photojournalistic greco, il Premio Fondazione Botsis, dal Presidente della Repubblica ellenica, il Sig Costis Stephanopoulos.
